Good Morning, Carolina Jessamine

I stepped outside this morning, coffee in hand, and saw this:

Now I ask myself, "how could anyone have less than a wonderful day after being greeted by this sight?

Carolina jessamine is a native evergreen vine with beautiful, fragrant yellow flowers that bloom in the Spring. It has small dark green, waxy leaves and can grow up to 20 feet long. Carolina jessamine grows well in the South.

It usually blooms in April but with this very early spring, like everything else, it is making its show a good month earlier than usual.

From Wikipedia:
Gelsemium sempervirens
Gelsemium sempervirens by Ellis Rowan, 1901

Gelsemium sempervirens is a twining vine in the family Gelsemiaceae, native to warm temperate and tropical  America from Guatemala north to the Southeastern United States. It has a number of common names including yellow jessamine or jasmine, Carolina jasmine or jessamine, evening trumpetflower, gelsemium and woodbine.
I hope you have a wonderful day, whether in the company of Carolina Jessamine or not!

  1. That is one beautiful plant! (It helps that it is yellow - my favorite color.) We have been renters since leaving Seattle, and love how easy it is, but this makes me miss being able to plant things in a yard.

  2. This vine was planted about 16 years ago and it grew fast. Another thing I like about it besides it's beauty in the spring, is the fact that it's evergreen. No bare arbor in winter. The scent is heavenly, a sort of musk rose scent. You seem to be exercising your gardening skills as a renter with the pots I saw on your blog!

  3. I should post more pictures, since those plants are growing so fast. From the tiniest seeds, too!
